An apostille is a type of certification or authentication used for documents that need to be presented in a foreign country. It is a special seal or stamp that is applied to official documents to verify their authenticity and legitimacy, making them legally valid in countries that are part of the Hague Apostille Convention. The Hague Apostille Convention, also known as the Apostille Treaty, is an international agreement that simplifies the process of authenticating documents for use in foreign countries. It was established in 1961 and has been adopted by a large number of countries around the world.

The purpose of the apostille is to eliminate the need for multiple layers of authentication, such as embassy or consulate legalization, when presenting documents in countries that are part of the convention.  It's important to note that the apostille only applies to the countries that are signatories to the Hague Apostille Convention. If a document is intended for use in a country that is not a party to the convention, additional steps might be necessary to authenticate the document according to that country's regulations.
